Off the hook :: doily window decoration

Some of you may remember that last year I made several thread-work snowflakes and strung them together to make a garland.  I adored my snowflake garland and it stayed hanging in my bedroom window long after the other Christmas decorations had come down - it became a Winter decoration instead. I think I finally took it down in March.

Then one Saturday night I stayed in experimenting with small doily motifs for a cushion.  A few days later I serendipitously saw this post on the French Knots blog.  Hurrah! A use for those small doilies and an all-year-round replacement for my snowflake garland.  Quite why it's taken so long to get around to finishing I don't know.

7 small doilies...

blocked* over clingfilm and stiffened with watered down PVA glue...

strung together with fine thread and hung in the window...

I love the finished result and am now wondering what this would look like with coloured  crochet cotton. Another thing to add to the to-do list.

* Once again I recommend these blocking guides from 'A stitch in time'. They are fabulous for making sure everything is symmetrical.   The blocking was truly transfomative - I wish I'd taken a 'before' photograph.

  4. Amazing! Wish I had patterns to make doilies; I'd start right now to make one (or two or more) of these myself!!! Great idea. Thanks!!!!
    Bye,

PS Did you get those patterns for the doilies out of a book??? Could you maybe tell me which one if so??? Yes, I mean it, I'd love to start on one of those garlands...

  5. These are just lovely. I'm wondering what a different coloured doilies would look like hanging down. I suppose you could always dye them to save buying different coloured crochet cotton. Hmmmm, you've got my creative juices flowing.
    Thanks for sharing,
    Anne xx

  6. Beautiful snowflakes! I'm in the process of blocking some for a garland, too. I have the blocking guides, but not the circular ones I saw listed on the site you mentioned. Thanks for the tip, I'll have to try them, as I think they will work better for me!

  10. A doilie mobile! How cool!
I'm sitting with a handful of small rectangular doilies from MIL...cream, light yellow, cerise and green. Was wondering what to do with it and now I'm thinking...string it like bunting/prayer flags?Wonder wether I should stiffen or not. Hmmm...

  11. Gorgeous - I always thought I would find crochet with a small hook and fine thread quite fiddly but from what I have tried so far, I find it quite therapeutic. I will definitely be looking up the blocking technique - thanks for the heads up. x
