I found them in a local grocers, labelled as rainbow carrots and sold 'dirty'...
I knew that carrots came in colours other than orange, but I've never come across any before so I thought I'd give them a go. I chose a recipe (scroll down the page to find it) where the carrots were given a starring role, peeled and chopped them...
and cooked them with cumin seeds, paprika, orange zest and chickpeas à la Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
Naively, perhaps, I thought the yellow and purple carrot might taste different than the everyday common place orange carrots.
They didn't.
They just tasted of carrot.

What beautiful colours Victoria.I once bought some purple flesh potatoes and hoped that they would somehow taste different too! Unfortunately they tasted just the same as white potatoes but just looked fab on top of a cottage pie :0)

Wow they look amazing!
ReplyDeleteWow, they are so amazing! I was going to ask about the taste but you answered my question at the end of your post. You just imagine they should taste differently.

They might just taste like carrots but the visual delight is amazing.

They are beautiful and make the dish look extra special, even if they taste the same. I had success growing normal carrots this Winter, I think rainbow carrots should be next on my growing list. :)
ReplyDeleteSo pretty! Ah well, carrot tastes good, so I wouldn't mind them tasting of carrot!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter grew some similar last year and gave them to me for a carrot soup, I was disappointed with the flavour, somehow I thought there would be a difference.

Even if they do taste like regular carrots - they look soooooo much more exciting!

What a wonderful array of colours to serve up on your plate. Bet it was yummy :)
ReplyDeleteDid the kids eat them? Hope the loft conversion is going well, will you have it finished before the start of Winter? Think of the extra space!
